Product Description
Vic Firth SIH1 Stereo Isolation Drummers Headphones are designed to protect musicians from the high sound levels associated with their instruments.Prolonged exposure to these excessive levels of noise can have traumatic and lasting effects, including hearing fatigue, tinnitus and permanent hearing loss. These are specially designed headphones, which drastically reduce the level of external sound reaching the musician's ears, offering valuable protection from potential damage. The SIH1 reduces overall noise levels by 24 decibels and features high quality stereo headphones. Unlike non-isolation headsets, where musicians typically crank the volume to very high and potentially damaging sound levels in order to hear the music clearly, the SIH1 reduces ambient noise from the instruments. This allows the musician to play along with the recorded music or monitor other performers in a live situation at comfortable and safe sound levels.Designed in conjunction with Vic Firth Signature artist Rod Morgenstein, these headphones were made with the recording, performing and teaching musician in mind! When asked about the SIH1's, Rod commented, 'The concept of these headphones has changed my musical life! After years of using open air headphones in studios and practice at volume levels that were damaging my hearing - I can now use these new headphones for hours on end with no fatigue at all, and with no risk of hearing damage since I can listen at a comfortable volume level.'

4 out of 5 stars Very Good but slightly Weak   July 9, 2010
db Master
I purchased these headphones and I am pleased for the most part in them. I bought these so that I could hear a click when I play the drums. These are better than normal headphones for that use.

They block out mainly high frequencies, but also some low frequencies. They make the toms, bass, and snare drums sound very boomy and the cymbals wimpy, which is good because a click is high pitched. I would say they block out 15db of low frequency, 25db of mid frequency, and 30db of high frequency.

I have a decibel meter and I have compared the volume output in these compared to normal headphones. Normal over-ear headphones output about 115db max. These output about 100db max. Even though they are 15db quieter, they block out more than 15db of noise than standard headphones, which may block out only 6-10 db. However, I am still concerned if I would be able to consistently hear a click.

However, I would not reccomend drumming with only these headphones on. Drums are around 125db. These block out 24db average. That means that 101db of sound is reaching your ears, which causes hearing loss in half in hour! I would reccommend wearing a pair of earplugs under these to limit sounds below 85db.

I would recommend these, because they do make everything quiet and less painful. They are comfortable also!

5 out of 5 stars Super effective   June 22, 2010

As a drummer, I make a lot of noise. These headphones not only protect my ears, they also improve the quality of the sound. When you don't have to listen the extra noise, you can hear the details, the real volume of what you're playing, and adjust yourself accordingly. I would totally recommend this to anyone. They're really great.

5 out of 5 stars A definite must have for a recording drummer   June 13, 2010

I got this because I was never able to hear myself while recording drum tracks. The models I used before had a looped cord, like the one shown in the picture, which was a little too short. I finally decided to get my own about a month ago, and it didn't have a looped wire. It had a straight one, which is longer, so thats good.
While tracking with the headphones plugged into the laptop I wasn't able to hear myself properly. I was disappointed, but then i plugged it into the headphone input in my speakers which were connected to the laptop, and the result was fantastic. They're loud enough no matter how hard you play. I bet Dave Grohl would have a hard time hearing himself play if he turned these headphones on all the way up !
Thats why these are a must have for recording drums. Even if you use them to listen to music, no matter how much you turn the music up, no one will be able to tell what you're listening too. If you have issues with volume, then these are great. Cancels outside noise, prevents your music from being audible on the outside, and so on.
Build wise, they're sturdy. They look heavy duty. The ones I've used before have never cracked anywhere. That's good if you use these in a studio, musicians often tend to be pretty careless.
Comfort varies from person to person. Some people can wear these for hours without tiring. Some people can't. My right ear starts hurting after excessive use, but i think it depends on ear size, personal preference, and a lot of other factors. When you put these on, you can feel a vacuum being made. They really do put you in your own audio world.
However, the quality isn't fantastic. The reason i gave it 5 stars is because I didn't buy these for sound quality. All I use these for is to listen to a metronome or a scratch track while tracking drums. The quality is no better than your average headphones. So if you want great sound quality, you might want to look elsewhere. But if volume is your issue, look no further. You simply will not be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent! Great headphonesphones for great value!   March 24, 2010

If you're reading these reviews, you may get the impression that the Vic Firth Headphones are of good quality but may have some issues. So let me tell you my situation. I have a low budget recording operation in the most acoustically hostile environment (a church with no insulation, and concrete floors... AND LOTS AND LOTS OF ECHO!!!). The echo creates circumstances that render conventional headphones useless. In many ways, it amplifies the sound. The Vic Firth headphones cuts out 85% of outside noise. This allows me to make effective and accurate mixes in this facility. This is all you need to know. Buy the headphones!

4 out of 5 stars Some Improvements   February 28, 2010
Michael P. Hurst (sunnyvale, ca)
These headphones have been improved from the last generation with padding that is more comfortable and conforms to the head better for a more secure sound barrier. On the other hand, it seems Vic Firth has gotten cheap on the quality of the actual speakers. The older sets have louder, clearer speakers, however with a headphone amp these new sets work fantastic... even with the loudest of drums. Isolation headphones are a must have for any musician who wants to play along to clear music without destroying their hearing over time, and I haven't seen any other headphones that compare to these in durability, sound, and price. I'm on my 4th pair and use them pretty heavily. They hold up really well but eventually one ear will short out and have no sound.
