Product Description
The nanoPAD from Korg is a slim line USB powered pad controller that provides a huge amount of controller functions for triggering drum samples and other uses. The unit features 12 pads, and an X-Y pad with "Roll" and "Flam" modes. The latter is useful for programming realistic drum grooves. In addition to triggering sounds and loops, the pads can also transmit control change messages, allowing the unit to emulate certain mixing functions, such as soloing or muting mixer tracks, and turning objects on and off. An additional switch is provided that can recall any one of four scenes. These scenes allow all the controls on the unit to be set up in several specific configurations.

1 out of 5 stars Horrible quality control   August 5, 2010
T. Mccullough (NYC, USA)
Purchased this item new from amazon in May of 2010. It was delivered around the beginning of June. I used it for a total of about ten minutes, maybe less. The unit was carefully stored in it's original packaging when not in use, but unfortunately, when I pulled it out to use it just a few days ago, one of the pads would not respond. A quick internet search revealed this to be a very common problem. Apparently, the build quality is so poor, the devices simply do not last. Korg is sending me a new unit. They did not even ask for the old one to be returned, so they are apparently aware that these are *disposable* upon premature failure...I can't really recommend this device, as it is simply not money well spent...

1 out of 5 stars Do not buy!   May 14, 2010

EDIT: After receiving an LPD8 as a replacement from Amazon and using a Novation Launchpad and an AKAI LPK25 in conjunction, I find that I really have all the tools I would ever need for music production with MIDI, especially with the LPD8's knobs. These three made me realise how useless the Nanopad really is.

When I received the product, I was very impressed with its design and it felt very sturdy and well weighted. As I plugged the USB cable in, I was worried I would break the plug because it is so flimsy and fragile. Once I got everything installed and loaded up, I tested the Nanopad in Reason, Toontrack, and Live and the pads simply do not function, straight from the box! Some of them stick when you use them and some of them just didn't work altogether.

My suggestion: Save yourself the money and the trouble, and buy something more durable. If you are looking for a pad midi controller with an X/Y pad, the Korg padKontrol is a very good alternative, is USB powered, and not enormous. The portability on the Nanopad is very tempting and it is a great idea altogether, but it simply does not function as it is supposed to. If you don't mind losing an X/Y pad, then go for the AKAI LPD8, but otherwise, avoid the Nanopad.

2 out of 5 stars Awful, awful product.   May 13, 2010

Item arrived defective. Four pads did not function at all. Many others on the Korg forums (15+) have all said their pads do not work as well. I have another friend who bought one a month ago, and it also stopped functioning. The item is just pure junk. Buy the Akai LPD8 or MPD18, they are much higher quality and more functional.

The Toontrack software worked perfectly. The Korg customer service was pretty good as well. Not the best, but alright.

I promptly returned the item and bought the Akai controller. I will not look back or ever use the Nanoseries again.

5 out of 5 stars very very cool tool!   February 2, 2010

this unit is fantastic! it works with software drum or synthesizer programs and gives you an inexpensive way to push the boundaries, blur the edges or otherwise make it unique. make it you. it is all great, yet the trackpad is the best bit: very responsive. i've bought a lot of korg products over the years and this most recent purchase is the best. forgive the gush. thank you korg!

4 out of 5 stars Great for the price.   January 22, 2010

I got this a few weeks after I got the Korg nanoKEY (midi keyboard), and I have to say it's significantly better than the nanoKEY in terms of build quality, but it's not without its flaws.

Pros:
*It's inexpensive! It's one of the cheapest drum controllers on the market, so that's definitely attractive.
*It's very sensitive. When I ordered it, I was expecting to have to hit it fairly hard to get a tone, but that's really not the case at all. If you barely touch it, it plays.
*The roll and flam features are really cool, and much more interesting than I thought they would be.

Cons:
*Day one, I noticed that the number 2 pad sticks occasionally. If you're trying to play quick notes on it, it can get really annoying, really fast. If you grab the sides and pull up on the pad, it un-sticks, and so far, it seems to be doing it less and less (I've had it about a month now), but it still DOES do it occasionally.
*I use Ableton Live, and this drum controller works great with it, but in Live, the drums are laid out in a 4x4 grid and this controller uses a 2x6 grid. The two grids don't line up at all, and there's really no rhyme or reason for the order they ARE in (it appears to be completely random). The only saving grace is that the kick seems to always be on 7, the clap on 1, the hi-hats on 10 and 12, etc. This isn't awful, but it's a little strange.

Summary:
It's a great buy for the money, but if your pad sticks, send it back! I didn't, but I'm kind of wishing I would have.
