Yamaha’s team of engineers and brass designers collaborated with Andy Martin and Alistair Kay to create the YSL-897Z Custom Z. After ironing out the basic design of the trombone, each man designed their own leadpipe. The Z1 leadpipe was designed by Martin, while the Z2 was designed by Kay. Each leadpipe has a different resistance, response, and tone. As you continue to learn how the YSL-897Z pairs with your playing style, be sure to audition each leadpipe. Doing so will allow you to balance the resistance of your horn with your mouthpiece of choice.

7.5-inch hand-hammered bell

The YSL-897Z’s bell began life as a single sheet of yellow brass. From there, the artisans at Yamaha hammer it into shape by hand using a selection of closely guarded techniques. What results is a beautiful singing tone with copious overtones. Yellow brass is a favorite bell material among trombonists here at Sweetwater. Yellow brass devotees report that the alloy reacts favorably to a player’s unique playing style, encouraging the user to reach new playing heights each time they play. Try the YSL-897Z for yourself and experience the Yamaha difference today.
